Who We Are
Global African Village is a small, all-volunteer non-profit that started in 2007 to provide humanitarian assistance to the impoverished Bagishu people of rural Uganda. Their average annual income is just $60 per year. Our primary projects are health care, education, infrastructure improvement, and small-business development. Just three of us run Global African Village outside our jobs and other commitments, so we can always use volunteer help. Because we have no staff or paid employees and minimal expenses, about 95% of the money we raise each year goes directly to our humanitarian projects in rural Uganda.
What We Do
Our humanitarian work with the Bagishu tribe in rural Uganda encompasses four main projects: education (we run a primary school, Joseph Community School); health care (we buy over-the-counter medicines for the villagers, who seldom have access to health care); infrastructure improvement (the Bagishu people have no system of running water); and small business development (our aim is to help villagers become more self-sufficient).
Our president Sebastian Wanzama-Piro, is a native Ugandan who has lived in Toronto for 35 years. He travels to Uganda about once a year to oversee our projects. He meets with the villagers to determine their needs, and we fund projects that promise to have the greatest long-term impact. We do not ship items to Uganda because this is quite cost-prohibitive. Instead, when Sebastian goes to Uganda, he buys all the items we need, which supports the local economy.
