Who We Are

The Buffalo (NY) Branch of the American Association of University Women ( AAUW ) was founded in 1890 and is one of the largest AAUW branches in New York State with over 200 members. Our members represent women leaders from the arts, business, education, government, law, medicine, science, and technology.

The American Association of University Women advances equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy, and research.

AAUW encourages diversity and has adopted the following statement:

In principle and practice, AAUW values and seeks a diverse membership.  There shall be no barriers to full participation in this organization on the basis of gender, race, creed, age, sexual orientation, national origin, disability, or class.

AAUW, founded in 1881, is open to all graduates who hold an associate's or equivalent or higher degree from an accredited college or university. Those who do not hold such a degree may affiliate as Friends of the Buffalo Branch, and undergraduates may become Student Affiliates..

With more than 100,000 members, AAUW is the oldest and largest national organization working for all women and girls.

What We Do

The Buffalo Branch of AAUW is one of the oldest in the country, having been founded in 1890. As a branch we provide scholarships and interest-free loans for college education, offer yearly "Grassroots Grants" for local projects, sponsor "Tech Savvy" for middle/high school girls and adults plus "Sister-to-Sister" for high school girls. We help support the student AAUW groups at UB and Daemen College. In addition, we hold monthly programs on topics of interest to the branch members, including an annual "International Women's Day" celebration on March 8. Our main fundraiser is a huge booksale (2016 is our 62nd annual sale), for which we need many volunteers. It will be held June 1-5 in the former Carolina Furniture Store in the Northtown Plaza, 3155 Sheridan Drive.
