Volunteer: Volunteer, Tutors and Mentors Needed!

Picture it. A student sits down to complete their homework. They begin to struggle and are about to give up. But then you sit down ready to tackle and break down the first problem with them. You walk them through it. The student just isn't getting it. You re-explain it, just in a different way. And it clicks. You see the bulb light up. It finally makes sense.

Are you looking for a rewarding volunteer experience? Are you interested in helping young students succeed?

Consider volunteering at the Seneca Street CDC!

We aim to provide our students with an outstanding after-school experience. We provide designated time during the After School program in which our students receive homework assistance from volunteers. Since some of our volunteers are from the University at Buffalo, we experience a true need for new volunteers in the month of January when college students are on their winter breaks.  But also needed through the year.

After homework time students are divided into groups and participate in enrichment activities such as, Girls on the Run, Arts and Crafts, Academic Games, Gym and Computer Lab. The day wraps up in the dining room where the students are provided a free hot dinner before going home for the evening.

Our Afterschool Program operates Monday/Tuesday/Thursday/Friday between 2:30pm and 5:30pm. Please feel free to contact Beth Ewen for more information at bewen@senecastreetcdc.org. or call 716-939-3501

We also run a Summer Program for 6 weeks Monday/Tuesday/Thursday/Friday between 9am and 1:00pm, please feel free to contact the above person Beth Ewen.    Thank You for Finding us

Volunteer: Volunteer Advocates for Children

What does casa stand for?

CASA is an acronym for "Court Appointed Special Advocate" for children

What is CASA?

Genesee County CASA is a private, non-profit organization whose purpose is to train and supervise a diverse group of volunteers to advocate for children who have been abused and/or neglected.  These children are at risk of being removed from their homes or have already been placed into the foster care system. CASA's goal is to ensure that all of these children have safe and permanent homes as quickly as possible.

What does a CASA do?

Once a volunteer has received throughout training and been sworn in by our local Family Court Judge, they are assigned to their very own case. The CASA meets and talks to parents, foster parents, teachers, principals, social workers, counselors, case workers, the child's attorney, medical professionals and anyone else who may have relevant information on the well-being of the child(ren).  The CASA then gathers all factual information and writes a report to the court approximately every 60 days which is seen by all parties involved in the case, including the Judge.  With more information in hand, the Judge can make the best informed decision as possible as to what should happen next in the lives of the children involved.

how does a CASA become involved on a case?

The only way a CASA can become involved in a case is through assignment by The Honorable Judge Adams, our local Family Court Judge.  At times, attorneys for the children have been known to also request a CASA be assigned to their case.
