Interested in spending a few hours outdoors this spring, engaging with the community, and helping to beautify and improve Buffalo’s West Side neighborhoods? Come join Heart of the City Neighborhoods, Inc. on Saturday, May 7th, 2016, 9am-12pm, in our Spring Community Clean-Up on Buffalo’s West Side for an exciting opportunity to make a difference in one of Buffalo’s vibrant core communities!
There are many challenges facing Buffalo’s core communities related to housing, poverty, and the environment, impacting the health and quality of life of residents. Decades of abandonment and disinvestment has resulted in a huge number of abandoned homes and lots across the city and a housing stock consisting of very old homes that require extensive maintenance and repairs to make safe, healthy, and affordable.
Volunteer-led community beautification projects help to revitalize and reinvest in communities that have experienced poverty and disinvestment. These projects go a long way to add investment, promote ongoing investment, create more attractive and healthy communities, affirm the personal dignity of residents, and boost and inspire neighborhood pride; efforts that have invaluable, meaningful short-term impacts purposed to insure long-term revitalization. This volunteer project will assist Heart of the City Neighborhoods, Inc., a not-for-profit Community Development Corporation, with our efforts and mission to improve neighborhoods, housing opportunities, and the quality of life for residents in our service areas.
During this project, volunteers will clean-up trash and debris littered in the community, help in community gardens, and engage with community stakeholders to help beautify and improve neighborhoods, giving residents an inspiring start to spring. The community clean-up will take place on and around Grant Street, in the heart of Buffalo, New York’s vibrant West Side. Specifically, the community clean-up will cover the area of Grant Street between Lafayette Avenue and Bird Avenue, and many surrounding streets.
HOCN will provide all of the necessary tools and materials for volunteers to safely collect trash and debris. Volunteers will be provided with water bottles and snacks throughout the event and lunch at the end. Volunteers should wear closed-toe, comfortable walking shoes and weather-appropriate attire, as this is a rain or shine event.
Volunteers can preregister by responding to this event post or by calling (716) 882-7661 ext. 205 or emailing c.miller@hocn.org. Volunteers day of are welcome, too!
Sign in will be held at 9:00-9:30am in a small blue tent at 382 Grant Street. Just bring your helpful, caring attitudes and come enjoy a few hours of making a difference in our community. We look forward to working with you!
