Description

In celebration of both service and the legacy of Cesar Chavez, Serve New York VISTA and The Service Collaborative of WNY are hosting a service project! Cesar Chavez dedicated his life to improving the treatment, pay and working conditions of farm workers and immigrant populations. If you would like to check out the annual press release by President Obama from 2015, you can find that link HERE.  On March 31st, in remembrance of his birthday, we will echo that passion for service on a project that is two-fold. At our first site, Vive La Casa, a program of Jericho Road Community Health Center, volunteers will help with a garden revitalization project, as well as some construction tasks that will greatly benefit the residents. Simultaneously, along the Niagara Street Corridor volunteers will engage in a much-needed street and community space clean-up. This project has been completely organized by AmeriCorps members from the Serve New York VISTA program, and we are excited to see this project come to fruition. Registration details can be found below, so please read carefully.

This project has been rescheduled to coincide with Earth Day, the mission of which aligns with Chavez's life's work, honoring nature and peace.

There are two separate sites for this service day, so please bear that in mind when registering to volunteer. One is at Vive La Casa itself, and the street clean-up headquarters will be the Niagara Branch Library, the map of which can be found below. If you have a strong preference for either location, you can include that when you register. All volunteers who register will be contacted the week of the event (Monday 4/18/16) to be notified of which site they will be placed at, so please provide accurate contact information upon registration. There is no guarantee of site placement.

This event will take place rain or shine, so comfortable, weather appropriate clothing is encouraged as attire for the day.

All AmeriCorps members are required to wear their "A" gear on the day of the event.

Online registration ends Thursday, 4/18/16 at 11:59 PM.

Registration of the event begins promptly at 8:30 for both sites, and the kick-off will commence at 9:00. The event should run no later than 12:30.

Final details, along with parking information will be sent out the week of the event.

We look forward to working with all AmeriCorps members and community volunteers on the day of. This project has been the culmination of many efforts and should result in a fun filled day of reflective community service.
