Volunteer: Bissonette House Dinner Volunteer

We are currently looking for volunteers to prepare dinner for residents of our residential facility, Bissonette House. Bissonette is a 120-day transitional home which houses about 24 men returning from New York State Prison at any given time. Our residents receive one-on-one case management and participate in a variety of programming designed to help them can gain the tools and knowledge necessary to rebuild their lives so that they may successfully reintegrate into the community.   Dinner time is special at Bissonette - it's a time when everyone gathers, shares a meal, and shares a bit of themselves. We believe that this is a fun opportunity for volunteers to meet and bond with our guys.    We are looking for individuals with a passion for social justice that will treat our clients with the dignity and respect that they deserve.

Assisting the cook with food prep (cleaning, cutting, chopping and peeling food ingredients.)

Cook basic dishes like mac n cheese, chicken, etc.

Volunteer: Vive Accompaniment Volunteer

Residents at Vive go through long, difficult journeys to finally end up claiming asylum in Buffalo. When they arrive they need to learn a new language, how to make it around a new city, take care of their physical and mental health, enroll kids in school, and lots of other complicated things. It's hard enough learning these things on your own when you a move to a new place. Imagine doing it in a new country while you are still learning the language!

Duties:

Accompaniment Volunteers will meet residents at the shelter and walk or ride the bus with them as they make their way to locations across Buffalo and then back to Vive. On Wednesdays we have a weekly Vive clinic that many residents attend. It is very busy and we cannot give everyone the individual attention they may need so Accompaniment Volunteers could stay with people as they wait. You can be that calming steady person that stands with them as they figure out we are truly the City of Good Neighbors!

Who you'll work with:

Volunteers work with Social Work and Family Program staff along with residents staying at Vive.

People with the following skills/experience would be great here:

No need for previous experience in social work or the medical field. Interest in sharing cultures with people different from you. Conversational fluency in a language other than English is great but not required at all.

Volunteer: Canopy of Neighbors Open Board Positions

Canopy of Neighbors is looking for Board members to help us serve the elder community in Buffalo.

Canopy of Neighbors is a non-profit organization creating new pathways to aging well and aging independently in community. Part of the national "village" movement, Canopy services a socioeconomically and culturally diverse population of seniors who need non-medical and non-social service supports to remain in their homes. Our volunteers drive seniors to crucial medical and social appointments, engage in friendly visits, volunteer help and socialization. We also run a robust programming schedule, which includes transportation. Our efforts are crucial to mitigating the negative effects of social isolation and allows seniors to remain in their communities and maintain positive mental and physical health outcomes.

Board members meet 5-6X/year for one-hour meetings, usually Tuesdays from 5-6pm. We are especially in need of volunteers with Non-Profit Governance and Finance experience, but all contributions of time, talent and treasure are welcome! Please call Sasha Yerkovich, Executive Director, at 716-235-8133, or at Sasha@Canopyofneighbors.org for more detailed information.

Volunteer: Run a Sports Collection Drive!

WNY Leveling the Playing Field has opened our doors and we are working to fill our warehouse with used and excess sports equipment so we can begin distributing it to kids in need by Spring 2024!

Collection drives are the most impactful way to help LPF get the gear we need to support local kids in need. Essentially, volunteer collectors tap into their network of classmates, friends, teammates, neighbors, etc. to collect any unused/extra gear. Donations are then transported to our warehouse, with an optional volunteer session to inventory and sort your own collections!

To learn more about how to run your own collection drive, please visit www.levelingtheplayingfield.org or contact WNY Program Director Cam Daugherty at cam@levelingtheplayingfield.org. Thank you for your support!

Here at Against All Oddz Animal Alliance INC., we are looking for folks who have a passion to bring order and charm to their environment and don't mind getting a little bit of dog-fur on their clothes (or potentially some slobbery kisses). Located in rural Darien Center, only minutes from Darien Lake Amusement Park, we are a mixed rescue/sanctuary for dogs caught up in the legal system with nowhere to go. We have 47-acres of pristine rolling pastures, lush forests, and even a federally-protected wetlands on the edge of our property!

Each of our 12 dogs either lives in their own cabin (with A/Cs, heaters, electric, all the amenities to make them comfortable) with the ability to enter and exit their own personal fenced-in run whenever they please! Our more social dogs live in our "Hotel" facility that is the central hub for most supplies and where volunteers hang out the most. Each of these dogs have their own private kennel space, and connected runs that allow them to run and play with each other as much as they want! It's quite adorable to watch.

That being said, it takes a lot of hands to keep all 6 cabins and Hotel in tip-top shape (especially in the dreaded mud season that is spring) to ensure our furry residents stay healthy and bright, especially the ones who will be living here their entire lives. While we ask all volunteers to participate in housekeeping, we understand there are people out there who specifically do not want to handle the dogs, but still want to help out how they can. They are always our biggest heroes because of the harmony they bring to our rescue through cleaning and organizing! It can be very busy here, so with a little bit of your TLC, you can help enrich not just a dog's quality of life here, but also the other staff and volunteers running around nonstop!

Cleaner Duties Include:

Sweeping and mopping floors / vacuuming rugsDusting and wiping down walls, surfaces, windows, doors, etc.Sanitizing door handles and vectors to prevent the spread of germs/bacteriaWashing dog bowls, rotating and scrubbing toys out of rooms, throwing away toys that have seen much better days, etcScoop poop as neededHelping rotate loads in the washer/dryerOrganize supplies as neededHelp our Volunteer Coordinator with gardening if that's up your alley!!

Benefits Include:

Volunteer Incentive ProgramsVolunteer Referral RewardsPotential for Hire-On should a volunteer demonstrate outstanding commitment and exuberance to Against All Oddz and its missionWorkshop Events with renowned dog trainer, Josh Moran of BarefootK9 in Buffalo, should you wish to join!Social bi-monthly events such as Vegan BBQs, Cornhole tournaments, Booze Cruises in Lake Erie, etc

If you are interested in joining our small army of animal lovers, please send us a message here or directly to our email: againstalloddzaa@gmail.com

Thank you kindly for looking!

Volunteer: Volunteer Online as a Conversation Partner

Ready to change a life from the comfort of home?

Join ENGin as a conversation partner! This is a flexible and unique opportunity to make a direct  impact on someone’s life while discovering a new culture and meeting a new friend.

We’ll pair you up with a learner in Ukraine for weekly one hour videochats at times that are convenient for you. During your conversations, you’ll practice English with your partner, learn about each other’s cultures, and offer an empathetic, authentic space for connection.

No prior tutoring experience or knowledge of Ukrainian language is needed to volunteer with ENGin. We offer ample training resources, session materials, and total flexibility to customize your sessions to fit your/your partner’s goals and preferences. Our friendly team is available to support you throughout your time with us.

Our only requirements for volunteers are English fluency, a strong internet connection, and the ability to commit to one hour a week for a minimum of 10-12 weeks.

Since our launch in 2020, ENGin has matched over 26,000 volunteers with Ukrainians for authentic English-language connection across borders, and we continue to grow every day. 99% of our learners report feeling they were able to break the language barrier as a participant in our program, and 79% of our participants form lasting friendships.

Here's what three ENGin volunteers say about their experience.

"I made a friend in Ukraine and we are teaching each other about our culture, our language, and our humor. We're even trading dad jokes! Both of us look forward to our chats and have a hard time wrapping it up."

“Fantastic organization doing great work. So happy to be a small part of it.  My partner and I have worked together for two years and have become good friends! Her English has become better, and I have become more knowledgeable about Ukraine!”

"This program has been, I think, life-changing for both of us. I really consider her more like my daughter right now. That's how close we have become!"

To learn more about ENGin and become a volunteer, please visit www.enginprogram.org/volunteer.
