Volunteer: Volunteer, Tutors and Mentors Needed!Picture it. A student sits down to complete their homework. They begin to struggle and are about to give up. And it clicks. You see the bulb light up. It finally makes sense. Are you looking for a rewarding volunteer experience? Are you interested in helping young students succeed? Volunteer: Volunteer Advocates for ChildrenWhat does casa stand for?
CASA is an acronym for "Court Appointed Special Advocate" for children What is CASA?Genesee County CASA is a private, non-profit organization whose purpose is to train and supervise a diverse group of volunteers to advocate for children who have been abused and/or neglected. These children are at risk of being removed from their homes or have already been placed into the foster care system. CASA's goal is to ensure that all of these children have safe and permanent homes as quickly as possible. What does a CASA do?Once a volunteer has received throughout training and been sworn in by our local Family Court Judge, they are assigned to their very own case. The CASA meets and talks to parents, foster parents, teachers, principals, social workers, counselors, case workers, the child's attorney, medical professionals and anyone else who may have relevant information on the well-being of the child(ren). The CASA then gathers all factual information and writes a report to the court approximately every 60 days which is seen by all parties involved in the case, including the Judge. With more information in hand, the Judge can make the best informed decision as possible as to what should happen next in the lives of the children involved. how does a CASA become involved on a case? The only way a CASA can become involved in a case is through assignment by The Honorable Judge Adams, our local Family Court Judge. At times, attorneys for the children have been known to also request a CASA be assigned to their case.

Volunteer: Help Spread Economic Opportunities in Niagara CountyThe COVID pandemic has greatly increased the number of individuals and families facing financial insecurity. YOU can help your fellow community members improve their economic health by volunteering for our Niagara County FREE TAX Prep Program, with sites located in Niagara Falls and Lockport. In this volunteer service position, you will help low income individuals and families file their taxes—and access eligible tax credits--saving them hundreds of dollars in unnecessary tax preparation fees. (Average cost of tax prep=$300 and tax credits, like the earned income tax credit, ranges from $506-$6,269) There is no prior experience required! We encourage all those who want to help the underserved communities most likely to be financially impacted by COVID-19 to join our team. Our FREE TAX Prep Program Protects people from the predatory tax prep companies which cluster in low income communities. 70% of those accessing the earned income tax credit use a paid preparer, spending 22% of their refund just to get it. Improves poverty rates, short term and long term--through the earned income tax credit, hundreds of families are brought above the poverty line. Research of the effects on children indicates that this has extremely important effects on the intergenerational transmission of poverty. Links people with free one-on-one financial counseling, budgeting, debt repair and other follow up services. Volunteer: Tool Librarian (Tooligan)A Tool Librarian serves as the lending agent for The Tool Library; providing access to our tool inventory, signing up new members, finding needed tools, and checking items in and out appropriately. Shifts are generally 2-3 hours long; Wednesday-Friday shifts are 2-5 PM or 5-7 PM and Saturday shifts are 10 AM-1 PM or 1-4 PM. We are seeking individuals who would be able to join us on a weekly or bi-weekly basis. A Tool Librarian is not required to have prior tool knowledge, as we believe The Tool Library is a great place to learn what you don't already know. That being said, we're looking for volunteers who have competency using Google Suites (Drive, Docs, Sheets, etc). Additionally, we work primarily out of a web-based software called MyTurn, and we provide both introductory training, as well as on-the-job training for this purpose. Training is held once a month for new volunteers (4th/last Monday), is from 6-8 PM and there are light refreshments. Are you a community-oriented people person with an interest in all things sharing, DIY, and neighborhood improvement? Join us and help keep our doors open and the tools moving.
