Volunteer: Volunteer, Tutors and Mentors Needed!Picture it. A student sits down to complete their homework. They begin to struggle and are about to give up. But then you sit down ready to tackle and break down the first problem with them. You walk them through it. The student just isn't getting it. You re-explain it, just in a different way. And it clicks. You see the bulb light up. It finally makes sense. Are you looking for a rewarding volunteer experience? Are you interested in helping young students succeed? Consider volunteering at the Seneca Street CDC! We aim to provide our students with an outstanding after-school experience. We provide designated time during the After School program in which our students receive homework assistance from volunteers. But also needed through the year. After homework time students are divided into groups and participate in enrichment activities such as, Girls on the Run, Arts and Crafts, Academic Games, Gym and Computer Lab. Volunteer: Volunteer Advocates for ChildrenWhat does casa stand for?
CASA is an acronym for "Court Appointed Special Advocate" for children What is CASA?Genesee County CASA is a private, non-profit organization whose purpose is to train and supervise a diverse group of volunteers to advocate for children who have been abused and/or neglected. These children are at risk of being removed from their homes or have already been placed into the foster care system. CASA's goal is to ensure that all of these children have safe and permanent homes as quickly as possible. What does a CASA do?Once a volunteer has received throughout training and been sworn in by our local Family Court Judge, they are assigned to their very own case. The CASA meets and talks to parents, foster parents, teachers, principals, social workers, counselors, case workers, the child's attorney, medical professionals and anyone else who may have relevant information on the well-being of the child(ren). The CASA then gathers all factual information and writes a report to the court approximately every 60 days which is seen by all parties involved in the case, including the Judge. With more information in hand, the Judge can make the best informed decision as possible as to what should happen next in the lives of the children involved. how does a CASA become involved on a case? The only way a CASA can become involved in a case is through assignment by The Honorable Judge Adams, our local Family Court Judge. At times, attorneys for the children have been known to also request a CASA be assigned to their case.

Volunteer: Peaceprints GuidesIndividuals face many obstacles in their transition back from prison. Supporting them as they reenter society benefits them, their families, their communities and all of us. The obstacles that ex-offenders face include significant gaps in computer skills and job and apartment hunting skills. For many ex-offenders, technology looks very different now from when they went in, and they need support bridging the gap. Here’s a big place where you can help! Peaceprints Guides work with ex-offenders to help them learn computer skills, including • how to look for apartments and jobs online; • how to use Gmail and Google Drive; • how to fill out online forms and save/upload document; • how to use Microsoft Word for resumes; • and how to manage basic social networking (Facebook, especially).
Guides also support ex-offenders as they • build and format resumes; • and make the next steps in housing and job searches (phone calls, applications, etc.). If you are looking at this posting, you already have many of the skills needed to be a Peaceprints Guide! If you use Word and have sent a resume by email, you have even more! Resources are also available to help you develop your knowledge and skills. All volunteering will take place in Peaceprint’s resource room in its Bissonette House (335 Grider, 14215). The resource room has two computers with Microsoft Office and internet access for you to use while tutoring. A head tutor will be present while you tutor, ready to answer questions and help with resources and tutoring. The head tutor has over a decade of experience teaching and tutoring, and has trained and supervised tutors following CRLA guidelines. Most importantly, the staff at the Bissonette House takes seriously the need for our space to be safe, comfortable and friendly for all. Peaceprints Guides will get an amazing experience, working for a wonderful cause. You will be engaged in a supportive, team-based environment where you are sure to learn and grow even as you make a real difference in people’s lives. Hours are available 7:30 AM-9:30 AM Monday through Thursday. You must be able to make one session a week for a period of 4-6 months. Volunteer: Clothes Closet VolunteersClothes Closet Volunteers needed Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Volunteers will be sorting through clothing and household items for suitability, then placing them in our “closet” for people to select. CMI is very fortunate in the amount of donations we receive. On Wednesdays, a new drop off donation program has been instituted from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. During this time, volunteers would be accepting items from donors who drive up to the Mission and drop off their donations. Persons satisfying this shift would be taking items out of donor’s cars, and bringing them into our repository room to be sorted at a later time. Because of the way we are accepting donations, contact is at a minimum, limiting exposure. Currently, the shift is heavy from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. but we are anticipating it to become busier from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. as commuters learn about this opportunity. It would be ideal for students needing volunteer hours and currently in hybrid or remote learning as they can bring their homework to work on. Must be able to lift 40 pounds and perform bending and up and down movement repeatedly. Due to our strict adherence to Covid-19 mandated guidelines, volunteers will sign in daily, answer a series of questions, have their temperature checked and wear a mask the entire time they are on the Community Missions campus.
