Who We Are
About the Museum
The Buffalo History Museum has been Western New York's premier historical organization since 1862. We are the keepers of the authentic stories that make our community unique. Our collections, exhibits, and programs tell the stories of the people, events, and movements that demonstrate Western New York's essential place in shaping American history.
What We Do
Over 250 volunteers give 9,000 hours of service each year. Their contributions are invaluable to the operation of the institution. Volunteers assist with nearly every aspect of museum operations from helping with fundraising events, giving museum tours, and cataloging artifacts.
Please note, special qualifications such as formal experience handling artifacts, working in libraries, teaching, or more may be required for some opportunities.
Education
These volunteers assist in a wide range of activities from guiding tours and managing youth activity tables, to assisting with programming or outreach in the community.
Events
Event volunteers support the Museum’s programs and fundraisers by greeting guests, assisting admissions with registration, and bartending.
Collections
The Museum’s collections team sometimes calls upon experienced volunteers to help catalog and care for 3-D objects.
Research Library
The Research Library’s staff utilizes skilled volunteers for assistance with archiving materials and conducting special research projects.
Interns
Through internships, students can earn course credit while gaining valuable museum experience.
